Robot vacuums are smarter and faster than ever before. Here are the best models you can buy right now. A home that cleans itself has been a dream for ages. Thanks to today's robotic vacuums , though, that fantasy sounds less and less far-fetched.

Current robotic vacuums are packed with loads of sensors, electronic eyes -- even lasers -- and they have enhanced computing power to match. Their prices have ballooned, too. Spending that much is extravagant, but it does net you next-level vacuum cleaning features.

Those cleaning features include multiple room and floor plan mapping , dustbins that empty themselves, turbo mode, plus elegantly designed hardware. To zero in on the best robotic vacuum cleaner, I spent over hours torture-testing a group of 10 robotic vacuums.

Among them are brand-new models that have recently launched, flagship models, as well as compelling options offered across numerous online retailers. I excluded older models that likely won't be sold for long. If someone were to give you a blank check and told you to buy a robotic vacuum, this is the bot to get.

Again, this is the best result that we saw on this specific test. The robot zipped through our test room in a short average time of 25 minutes, too. It both charges the robot's battery and empties its dustbin automatically. Now that's convenient. Read our first impressions of the Roomba S9 Plus.

The vacuum cleaned dirt, dust and sand from midpile less effectively though, notching a pickup average of 47 percent. You can also control the cleaning robot through the Neato app, as well as link it to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The app allows you to designate areas of your home as off-limits, too. Read Neato Botvac D7 Connected preview. Here's a machine that proves you don't need to blow your budget to purchase a solid robot vacuum cleaner. That's especially the case when cleaning hardwood bare floors.

And due to this vacuum's basic navigation system, it took well over an hour to negotiate our test room.

Still, the Eufy used its runtime wisely. Our method for evaluating robot vacuums is straightforward, yet grueling. There are two types of tests we run. The first trial is to figure out how well a robot covers the floor.

We built an industry-standard testing room, as specified by the International Electrotechnical Commission , just for this purpose. The IEC is an international standards body responsible for managing robot vacuum testing procedures, among other things, for vacuum manufacturers.

Inside this room are objects designed to simulate typical obstacles a robot encounters for navigation as it cleans. These include wall edges, table and chair legs, couches and so on, plus floorings of tile, hardwood and carpet. Here's a coverage photo of the iRobot Roomba S9 Plus as it moved through our test room.

You can see it covered the floor well, except for one slight section in the center left, bottom. We mount LED lights to the top of each vacuum cleaner. The dimensions of the lights correspond to the measured nozzle width of each particular robot vacuum we test. As robots move through the room, a camera overhead captures a long-exposure image of the entire room in low light. That photo will then have a light trail, created by the LEDs, that shows the exact areas where the robot traveled and its nozzle position during its runtime.

We can also see areas of the floor the vacuum may have missed. Neato Botvac D7 Connected. This is the coverage pattern created by the Neato Botvac D7 Connected. Its movement through our test room was very orderly, logical and effective. The second type of test reveals exactly how much physical debris a vacuum is able to pick up off of the floor. To mimic dirt of small particle size, we use a mixture of play-sand and landscaping sand. For bigger particle soil, we use grains of uncooked black rice.

Robots then run in a straight line across three types of flooring low-pile carpet, medium-pile carpet and hardwood. We control for the specific nozzle width of each vacuum, too.

We constructed an ajustable tool to soil our test floors. It lets us lay down a strip of precise area of soil to match the nozzle dimensions for every robot. The mass of soil isn't chosen at random either. We measure a proportional amount that's related to the flooring material, type of debris, plus each vacuum's nozzle width.

We conduct three runs at minimum on each floor type. We also test with sand and rice separately. That comes to at least 18 tests per vacuum. We weigh the robot's dust bin both before and after each run. Additionally we run anecdotal visual pet hair tests for each robot, on all three floor types.

The chart below shows the fine particle cleaning performance data for all of the robot vacuums we tested. It should give you a pretty good idea about their performance on different kinds of flooring surfaces. Our rice-based, medium-size particle test didn't show enough differentiation between each cleaner, which says they can all handle larger particles without trouble. For fur removal for pet owners, we judged anecdotally. Here's a list of the other robot vacuums we tested besides the models listed above.

Merci, moppyboii! Press the button again to start the job, and it's like you have your own, personal cleaning butler. While all three picked up nearly percent of Cheerios on both wood and carpet, the Roomba picked up only 82 percent of sawdust sprinkled on a vinyl surface, compared to percent for both the Samsung and the Neato. The Roomba fared even worse when cleaning pet hair.

On vinyl, the vacuum sucked up just 46 percent of fur, while the Neato and Samsung both got all hairs. Repeating the test on a wood surface, the Roomba improved by 20 percent, but was still well behind the other two.

On carpet, the Roomba left behind 58 percent of pet hair even after vacuuming over it for 18 minutes, whereas the Samsung and Neato left just 25 percent. Even on flatter floors, the left behind a significant trace of fur. The exhaust vent on the device also caused the pet hair to fly up and out rather than into the dustbin. The Roomba is good at navigating around walls and furniture legs, and even around stray cables and lost shoes.

It never once tossed itself down the stairs, even when it reached the edge, nor did it get caught on my woven rugs. Like its predecessors, the Roomba comes with two "virtual walls," each of which requires two AA batteries. They can be set up as a partition of sorts around your space, either at the door or around a sensitive area.

One of the 's biggest follies is how loud it is. Though it tested at only 70 decibels at our lab, this little robot makes vacuum sounds as loud as those of an upright. The Neato Botvac and Samsung R both registered higher decibels 72 and 71, respectively , but I didn't feel like moving to another part of the house while they were cleaning.

The Roomba 's second major flaw is that it doesn't clean well around corners or edges, because of its circular shape, regardless of whether you enable the Edge cleaning mode inside the iRobot app. Perhaps it's time iRobot considers straying from the shape it helped popularize and modernizing its abilities.

Whether it's spot cleaning or performing a sweep of the house, the Roomba smoothly routes itself back to its base station and parks itself to charge up before the next cleaning. The robot managed an hour and 22 minutes on a square-foot area.

The iRobot app features a navigable interface with distinct menu options, including a giant Clean button in the middle of the screen. If the dustbin is full, you'll see a giant red marker. Additional options let you choose your cleaning preferences, schedule the Roomba, see its cleaning history and figure out when it's time for actual bot maintenance, including cleaning out the debris extractors. The iRobot app offers other helpful feedback, too, like maps of where it's cleaned once it's finished a session.

Setting the Roomba up to work with the Google Home or Amazon Echo is also supremely easy, and there's even a walk-through on iRobot's site. This vacuum has plenty of tread to make it over the uneven parts of your house, suction that can suck up all the cat litter strewn about, and an app that is easy to use and intuitive enough that your even your technophobic relative could program this thing.

If you're going to drop nearly a thousand dollars on a robot vacuum, make sure that it picks up what's ailing you. The iRobot Roomba simply might not. Tom's Guide. Home Reviews. Our Verdict The Roomba is a dutiful helper around the house, but its trouble with pet hair and its high price should convince you to look elsewhere.

Squishy robots, robots that can feel, and miniature autonomous robots that can set up a wireless network were among those displayed in a Manhattan showroom last night. A soldier looking to set up a wireless network in a hurry could dash through a building, chucking the little guys into various rooms. The robots, which are outfitted with treads and can climb surfaces twice their height, then will move themselves automatically to configure an optimal network.

If one should break, or get blown up, the swarm will reconfigure itself. I got a hands-on demo with this one. Slipping my index finger into a small ring-like structure, I was able to open and close a robotic claw. When I directed the robot to grasp a rubber ball, the ring-like control unit pushed back on my finger with an equivalent force. With DARPA funding, iRobot teamed up with researchers at the University of Chicago to make robots of a squishy substance that can alternately harden and go limp.

First, the researchers made a sided die—really—out of the material, demonstrating that by alternately rigidifying one side, then another, then another, the die could leverage gravity to essentially roll itself.
